First Jerry Ziegenfuse has officially retired as an ESL pilot..

Something happened this weekend that isn't good for the future of the ESL. Daniel Boone Silent Flyers announced that this was the last contest they are putting on. There are only 2 local active members. Dale and the club were being crushed by the amount of work needed to pull off a contest. This is a sad loss for the ESL. It might not be over yet though as there may be interest by some parties to pick up the torch.

But here is the topic for discussion. If we are to survive we can't think of this anymore as a contest that you go and fly at. We probably need to consider that we are the pilots and need to help out at the contest. Clubs that have many members do benefit by the dollars being brought in, so they really need to step up and help, but on the other hand if they don't the event will die. So we must step up and help out. Also the type of event might influence the amount of help. On the one hand running an open winch might be easier in some ways, it has less chance of getting people to help out on the winch line. Why??? Because half are usually up flying and the other half are timing, or they are waiting for the right air to go.. MOM might be more intensive to run, but allows for more helpers since there is more down time.

The Daniel Boone field BTW is available to any club that wants to hold a contest there. Jerry will make contacts and get the field mowed.
